Officially, summer has arrived, however as I write this and look out of the shop window I cannot see much evidence, there are some people in shorts but they don't look that relaxed about it and we're still selling hand warmers. New Zealand managed to draw the series with England in the cricket with a proper thumping in Yorkshire, the adopted home of cricket, and a dog won Britain's Got Talent again. Let's hope when the summer does arrive it stays around for a while and the England cricket team can get some much needed practice and you can all get plenty of golf played.
Golf's US Open starts in a couple of weeks and as usual we are holding our sweepstake, just come into the Pro Shop and choose your number. There are plenty of prizes to be won.
Charity Bike Ride
I am still training hard for the Charity Bike Ride in a couple of weeks' time. Will flew over France on his way back from holiday the other week and thought, rather Maurice than me.
I'm sure it will be a great adventure though and I'm looking forward to it and it is for a great charity the Keech Hospice. Please click here if would like to donate or come and see us in the Pro Shop.
We are now taking entries for the Leighton Buzzard Pro-Am. It is taking place on Wednesday 19th August. With the golf course well and truly moving forward it is a great opportunity to compete with a Professional in a day where you play for some fantastic prizes.
It is a comfortable format with the two best scores out of four counting and you get to play with some of the best PGA Professionals in the golfing in the area. Our goal is to get to 40 teams this year and we require your support to do this. If you would like to enter a team please click here to register your interest. It truly is a great day at the Club.
Play more consistently
Some common faults I see many players make are: not taking enough club into the green and using too much loft around the green. Everybody wants to hit the ball farther, and everybody loves that soft little pitch shot that finishes next to the pin. But reality often kicks in.
Here's some advice: Take an extra club on approach shots, and then swing within yourself. You'll hit the ball solidly a lot more often if you go at 75 percent instead of 100. Your swing will be mechanically better at a speed you can support.
Around the greens, use different clubs-don't just grab your lob wedge. Let the lie and the amount of green you have to work with dictate the club you pick. Then you can use the same swing for most greenside shots. In other words, you're changing clubs, not your swing, to hit different shots.
Some people do have a particular talent for the short game. Click here to see Seve playing some wonderful shots around the green.
