The competition results have come thick and fast with Mark Hammond beating Paul Johnson to win the Seniors Trophy. Matt Hill beat David Jones to win the Peter Taylor scratch event and Jean Bendall & Mick Myatt beat Debbie Pollard-Barns & David Banwell to win the Davis Cup. Well done to all the winners.
I have been fortunate enough to coach Mark, Matt and Jean over the years and it is particularly pleasing to see Jean win an event as partner to Mick Myatt. I first met Jean when she was a complete beginner golfer. She came for lessons with Val Smith and they both learned to play golf and both joined the club. Now Jean has graduated to win a coveted Club trophy with Mick. Excellent news and long may it continue.
In other results Andy Tizzard & Jane Tizzard won the Mixed Turkey Medal with a nett 71.5. Second place was taken by David Banwell & Debbie Pollard-Barns with a nett 73.5 and in third place was Richard Samuels & Angela Samuels with a nett 74. Foursomes is a tough so well played to all of you.
Australian born Debbie Pollard-Barns has also been installed as Captain of the Ladies Section of the Club, driven to the first tee dressed in an artists' smock and supported by a mini-army of painters. The drive-in was the work of Vice Captain Angela Samuels and was designed to capture Adelaide-born Debbie's passion for art, graphics and photography. Debbie took up golf at Windmill Hill, she was encouraged to take a greater interest in the sport by son Freddie, and joined the Leighton club in 2005. Debbie now plays off a handicap of eight while her son Freddie turned professional three years ago and having recently passed his PGA qualifications, is shortly to fly out to Australia to spend a year playing and coaching before moving to Canada.
During her term of office, Debbie will be raising funds for Keech Cottage along with Club Captain Steve Leng.
Top scorer in the competition following the drive-in was Gill McDougall, who won the Silver Division award with 39pts, four clear of Debbie who beat her "Vice" on countback. The Bronze "A" Division winner was Avril Simpson with 33pts, while Sylvia Dell beat Jan Harries on countback after both finished with 31pts. Just one point separated the top three finishers in the Bronze "B" Division, with Sue Preston taking top spot on countback from Betty Bluett, with Sally Enright taking third place.
My flash tache is going strong with 12 days growth now and no, it is not painted on. I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received. Online £85 has been raised and offline in the shop £120 has been raised. It is great to raise the awareness of Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer and Mental Health problems. In recent times there has been a large amount of media coverage relating to Mental Health problems which I think is great as I am certain so many people suffer in silence through fear of stigma. This is a great shame as Mental Health problems literally ruin people's lives and cause deaths. Also I know of members who have recently been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and I wish them well for the future.
