Leighton Buzzard Golf Club Golf Director
I am delighted to say the club has received a new accolade - it's been named as one of top 50 parkland courses in the UK.
The club, which has invested over £200,000 in course improvements and new equipment in recent years, is described in the sport's leading magazine 'Today's Golfer' as "an impressive combination of parkland and heathland golf, with many fairways overlooked by mature trees."
And the golf magazine describes the 90-year-old club's signature 11th Par 3 hole as "breathtaking." Which is an apt description for the results recorded in recent days by some of the 600 playing members.
Immediate Past Ladies Captain Debbie Pollard-Barns and Niki Clarke teamed up to win the Daily Mail foursomes competition and will now represent the club in the ladies regional finals of the competition next year.
The club seniors returned to winning ways, with a 5-1 victory at Aylesbury Vale. Skipper Robbie John and John Alstead, Graham Robinson and Harry Adam, Dave Roberts and Kelvin Young, Steve Shepherd and David Newby and Denis Leitch and Martin Broadley all returned winning cards, with George Darbyshire and Dave Debell halving their match
On Friday Mark Hammond, playing off a handicap of seven, carded 44 points to win the club-based Sandhouse Society Captain's Cup competition… beating Graham Horne by a hairs width.
Mark Knight took third place with 42 points, giving him an aggregate total of 116 points for three out of five qualifying games to be crowned Sandhouse 2016 champion and Captain for 2017. Tony Simpson and Phil Coumbe were runners-up with 111 points.
There were nearest the pin prizes for Rob Tate, Graham Horne, Paul Ellam (2), Mark Knight, Ian Alexander and Phil Coumbe, with Coumbe, Ellam, Knight and Alexander winning the Square Ball team event with 185 points, one more than runners-up Mark Hammond, Trevor Stimpson, Alan Philpott and Graham Horne.
Club members failed to reclaim the exchange trophy at the weekend while visiting Meaux Boutigny Golf Club in France! Nick Clarke former captain played alongside Andy Vale to record the Club's only success, ironically Nick was accompanied by Andy's daughter, Augustine, at Easter for the clubs only success then!
Nick and Andy parred the first 10 holes to be 6 up after the 10 holes and eventually winning 6&5. Kevin O'Donoghue and Vivienne Vale lost as did Bob Marshal and Vale Berry to give Meaux a 2 - 1 success! Any members who would like to get involved in the exchange please contact either Kevin O'Donoghue or Nick Clarke for details!

It's not long now until the chest thumping and fist pumping starts, and in the build up to this year's Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, a few of the players have been busy slapping on a bit of face paint. Time to book your place in front of the TV, or down the club, and watch all the action on Sky Sports.
I hope you enjoyed the newsletter and have a great weekend.
