Greetings golfers,

Fitting news

Fitting Is The Way Forward

The weather has been great and players have been taking advantage of our free custom fitting experience. We recently held a Titleist demo day which was a great success with players being able to try a variety of shafts and clubheads and find the correct set up for them. Golfers often come to us with a pre conceived idea of what suits them, sometimes they'll think as they have always used graphite shafts then they should stick with graphite.

When we then get them to try one of the lightweight steel shafts and compare the results and they see they actually hit the ball further and straighter they are very surprised, obviously this isn't always the case but it shows the importance of getting the correct advice and being able to try out all the options available before committing to buying a new club or set of clubs. With our FlightScope technology it gives us a great chance to see the data of each shot and come to the correct decision of what suits you best.

Competition news

The August Midweek Medal saw some great scoring with Adam Cobb coming out on top with 44pts, one point ahead of Nat Jones and four ahead of Dave Langford. With 39pts came Mike Smith, Voja Savic, Mike Manning, Tim Hobday and Darren Valentine

Last Saturday saw the August Club Stableford being played and its congratulations to Darren Valentine who won Division One with 42pts. Second place went to Steve Richardson who scored 40pts and third went to Peter Burgoyne who scored 39pts. Scoring 38pts were Billy O'Neill, Brian Wilson, Ben Irvine and John Tarbox. Division Two was won by Steve Gibbs after scoring 43pts, second place went to Pete Townley with 41pts, scoring 40pts were Richard Harris and Andy McDonald and with 39pts was Dan Hill.

The Past Captain's Trophy took place on Sunday and Keith Camp triumphed after scoring 39pts. With 34pts came Adrian Stephenson and Mel Glover.

Ladies Vice Captain, Avril Simpson, and Vicki Pratt were pipped for a place in the final of a national competition after they qualified as club representatives for the regional final of the Peugeot LGU Coronation Foursomes at Wellingborough. They had high hopes of winning a two day trip to St Andrews for the Grand final, carding 36 points after their early start…only for late finishers from Tadmarton Heath to beat them by a point.

Sandra Bellis was top scorer in the Ladies August stableford, winning the Silver Division with 41 points, Patti Marriott finishing runner-up with 39pts. Gill Ladd took the Bronze "A" Division top spot with 38 points, two clear of Avril Simpson, while former Ladies Captain Tricia Boote was Bronze "B" Division winner with 40 points, Maggie Shaw finishing runner-up.

Will Sampson, Martin Broadley, Cicely Goldsmith and Niki Clark teamed up to win the McKinnon Cup with a nett 58.6, with Dave Kingham, David Newby, Val Berry and Jane Tizzard runners-up with a nett 59.6. The annual event partners members from the Senior and Ladies sections.

Mike Turnock is still winning trophies 64 years after taking up the sport in which he was once a professional. Retired land drainage surveyor Mike is the new Bedfordshire County Seniors Over 70's champion, winning the title for a second time in four years. Now aged 76, Mike took up golf at the age of 14, and four years later was playing off a handicap of nine. An assistant at the Sandy Lodge and then Upminster golf clubs, Mike tried his hand on the professional circuit playing off scratch and teaching the sport to players trying to improve their game. "But I realised I needed a proper job and returned to the amateur game" said Mike, who won the County trophy for his age group at a rain-soaked Luton Hoo playing off a handicap of seven. He had previously won the same trophy four years ago at Dunstable Downs carding a score of 76.

Mike is a triple champion of the Leighton Buzzard club he joined over 60 years ago, since which time he has won most of the trophies members can compete for. A regular with the successful Seniors team at the Plantation Road club, Mike also plays for Bedfordshire County and Seniors teams.
