Greetings golfers,

Gapping sessions

The Importance Of Correct Gapping

When watching any of the top golfers on the various tours all over the world it is always impressive to see how good they are at distance control with their wedges, they give themselves every opportunity to either save par or make a birdie.

Obviously there has been a lot of practice involved but also getting the correct gapping in their wedges lofts is essential. Many manufacturers now have stronger lofted sets of irons on offer and this has led to a big gap in loft between a pitching wedge and sand iron.

If you have just the two wedges in your bag find out what the loft of your pitching wedge is, if it is 45 degrees you will have a large gap to your sand wedge, which will be around 56 degrees.

Filling this gap can be essential if you are struggling with distance control. A gap wedge has around 50 degrees of loft so it fits in nicely.

This way you don't have to either hit a pitching wedge softly or a sand wedge hard to achieve that in between distance.

So have a count up of how many clubs you have in your bag and see if there is room for an extra wedge, it can make scoring a whole lot easier.

Competition news

Congratulations go to Tom Fitzgerald who won Division One of the July Monthly Medal last Sunday with a great round of nett 65 which was three shots ahead of Tim Hobday and four better than Peter Sheridan. Only seven others managed to break the par of 71.

In Division Two it's a big well done to Adam Cobb, who won the division with a superb round of nett 64. Tony Brinded carded a nett 66 to finish second, one shot ahead of Eddie Young's nett 67 and Ben Hazell was the only other player to break par with a nett 69.

John Allinson won the July midweek medal with an impressive nett 64 with Ian Down a shot adrift and Fred Ritchie, Ken Wilson, Steve Foster, Nigel Chapman, Geoff Glover and Tom Fitzgerald all finishing with a nett 69.

Seniors section

Seniors' skipper Robbie John teamed up with Andy Lock, but unfortunately they lost their opening match against Dunstable Downs, but wins by Mike Turnock and Patrick Quinlan, Andy McDonald and Graham Avery, Dave Kingham and Geoff Allatt, Paul Johnson and Terry Dell, and Harry Adam and Martin Broadley earned the club a 5-2 victory with Dave Debell and Alec Jones halving their match.

Junior golf

The Junior Club Championship was played on Monday in beautiful conditions and it was our Junior Club Captain Tim Martin who won the Gross competition with a 36 hole total of 151. Well played Tim.
